b-12 shots
Apr 14, 2003

whats the difference in benefit between vitamin b-12 pills and shots?

Response from Mr. Vergel

There are no studies comparing the absorption of oral and injectable B-12 in HIV. However, there was a small study in 1992 (pre-HAART) that showed that decreased secretion of acid, pepsin, and gastric juice volume in the stomach may interfere with B-12 absorption (so B-12 shots may be a better option). However, we have no data after the introduction of HAART and do not know whether this still holds true. Many people report feeling more energy and appetite after a 1 cc shot of B-12 every week. Talk to your doctor about this since injectable B-12 is only available by prescription. Also, your doctor can check your B-12 vitamin levels in your blood to detect any defficiencies.
