ARE TREADMILLS ALL THAT GOOD?
Jun 6, 2004

Dear Nelson, I'm thinking of buying a treadmill for convenience and to reduce the size of my belly. I love to walk and hike but do not get to do that as much as I'd like due to my work schedule. My cholesterol is also borderline and Ive gained about 10 lbs since testing positive about 5 years ago. Most of the weight is from laziness but I always seem to feel better after a hike or walk and thought a treadmill to jump on when I felt like walking would be a good way to reduce cholesterol, improve my mental well being while losing a little excess weight. I do not want to exercise to the point of losing weight and not stopping. I hate free-weights and want to tone instead of bulk out or become muscular. Views and advice please? Im 42, high TC low VL-healthy, light smoker.

thanks!

I prefer the elliptical trainers since they are easier of your joints than the treadmills. They are more expensive, though. I prefer to work out at a gym where I can be motivated by looking at people around me. Here is a guide that may help you with your decision: http://products.consumerguide.com/cp/family/browse/index.cfm/type/prod/id/11244

To improve compliance, you may want to listen to music or watch TV while you work out a sweat for at least 30 minutes a day. Also, I would stop smoking if I was you (but you know that, right?). eat small meals through the day that contain fruits, vegetables, nuts, lean meats, and low sugar/refined flour. And have your testosterone and thyroid hormones checked at least once a year.

Good luck. It takes a while to develop a habit and make it "stick" in your life!
