Tightning of tendons
Jun 2, 2003

First of all, thank you very much for posting this message board about lipo and other HIV problems. I am 36, 59, 175, and HIV for about 11 yrs. I have started showing all signs of lipo in the face, hands and buttocks which is very upsetting. While these are problems I am currently facing , I am experiencing another one. I think the tendons of my legs are tightening up or shrinking. As a weightlifter, I can only spread my legs 9 inches apart making bench pressing almost impossible because i can't lay on the bench with legs apart. Is this because of the medication I am taking (Zerit, Agenerase, Norvir, and Epivir) or another reason? I am trying to stretch the area but it has become painful because of the muscle loss in the buttocks. Any ideas how to stop this increasing problem?

Too tight

Response from Mr. Vergel

There have been a few studies of potential muscle damage caused by nucleoside analogs (AZT and Zerit in particular). Read the link below for more. Talk to your doctor about possibly switching you from Zerit to Ziagen or Viread. Also, you may want to take 3000 mg/day of L-Carnitine split in two doses with meals to see if your problem gets better. Carnitine may help with the mitochondrial toxicity caused by nucleosides (right now this is just a speculation not proven 100 % by research)
