Low Carb Diets: Any special concerns for HIVers?
Aug 24, 2008
I was diagnosed in November of 2007. At that time, I thought the best thing I could do for my health would be to quit smoking, and I did. As of today, I'm still smoke-free!
The only problem is...over the last nine months, I've packed on some serious pounds. For my body frame and type, I need to lose about 40 lbs.
From past experience, I know the Atkins diet works for me. As I get down to my target weight, I plan on slowly increasing my carb intake. Once I reach my goal weight, I'll use sugars and processed carbs very sparingly and get the majority of my carbs from fruits and vegetables. (Of course, I will be doing regular aerobic exercise during this whole process as well, and will also be adding weight training to my regimen.)
I was just curious if: A) the resulting ketosis from the Atkins diet will interfere with the Truvada/Kaletra combo that Im currently on; or B) if low-carb diets negatively influence CD4 and/or viral load counts. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated!

Response from Mr. Vergel
It seems that you are on the right track. Congrats on leaving smoking in the past!
Low carbohydrate diets have not shown to be detrimental to immune function. They have been shown to be effective at lowering lipids and blood sugar. But as you know, they are difficult to adhere to in the long term. You can also try a more moderate approach like the South Beach Diet and Sugar Busters.
Are you exercising?
