Weight Increase
Jan 31, 2004

Hi, I am about 10 kgs underweight as per my height. What can help increase my weight.

Response from Mr. Vergel

You need to do the following:

1- Eat more. Sometimes this is not easy to do because of lack of appetite or nausea. Eat small meals instead of large ones and concentrate on higher calorie foods (peanut butter, nuts, meats, eggs, cheese, etc)

2- Exercise with weights and machines and minimize aerobic exercise until your weight goes up and stabilizes. Do this 3-4 times a week for an hour

3- Ask your doctor to test your hormones (testosterone, DHEA and thyroid) and treat accordingly

4- Take a good vultivitamin twice a day with meals

5- If you have some money, you may want to try to take two whey protein shakes (if you can tolerate it) a day (30 grams of protein per shake with fruit and milk or rice milk). You can add flaxseed oil to the shake for more calories also.

6- Make sure you have no diarrhea or GI problems that may impede food absorption

Talk to your doctor and ask him to refer you to a dietitian to make specific recommendations based on your current food intake, frame size and activity levels.
