Soy Milk Expiration Dates
Mar 30, 2002
I am a new dietitian, currently working for a non-profit agency solely caring for HIV/AIDS clients. We have a food pantry that is stocked for the most part by donations from our state/local food bank. One of the most recent products to be donated is shelf-stable soy milk; however, the expiration date reads May 2001. Should we still be allowing our clients to take the soy milk or should we discard it secondary to an increased risk of bacterial contamination, etc. Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Response from Ms. Fields-Gardner

Because you are distributing foods and because persons with HIV infection and the potential for immune compromise is real, it would be wise to distribute items prior to the stamped expiration date.
This is not to say that the product you have is bad... just that it is not a good idea for a group such as yours to distribute expired items that are not guaranteed safe or fresh past the stamped date. Hopefully products that are not yet expired will be donated in the next batch.
Best wishes in your endeavors!
