anxiety and stress

Hi, Is anxiety and stress what happens to you when you find out you are hiv+ or is this a symptom of the disease.thanks
Response from Mr. Shernoff
There is no one way that all or most people respond to learning that they are infected with HIV. For many individuals having a depressive or anxious reaction to being diagnosed with a potentially life threatening illness is one normal phase that they go through and generally, but not always move out of. When people have HIV neuro-psychiatric impairment part of the symptomology may include symptoms of depression or heightened anxiety. I hope that this is helpful. Michael Shernoff, MSW
