Both of us are positive can we have sex?

Mar 4, 2013

I was diagnosed HIV positive in July last year and my wife in December, 2012. We are both on treatment although the CD4 was low (94). So doctor, how often can we have sex? We are responding well on ARVS.

Response from Dr. Fawcett

Thanks for writing. In short, yes! It is important that you are both on treatment, and your viral load should be undetectable (you don't mention what that is).

Many HIV+ persons "serosort," that is, they only have sex with other HIV+ persons. It is important to remember that there are various strains of HIV and there is a risk (although very small) of creating a superinfection (being infected with several strains of the virus) that could impact the effectiveness of your medications. Of course, ARVs don't protect you from the many other sexually transmitted infections or hepatitis.

Consult with your healthcare provider to be certain your lab values are where they need to be and for any other unique circumstances. Here is a page from TheBody that describes serosorting. It is not really designed for married couples but it has helpful information on sex between two positive individuals.

Take care,
