Does drinking Chinese tea (Gunpowder or Green Tea) affect HIV treatment?
Feb 3, 2013
I have HIV and I have been used to drinking Chinese green tea in my country. Now I have started treatment for HIV. Is it good for me to drink this tea without affecting my treatment?
Response from Dr. Fawcett
Thanks for writing. There are some very preliminary data that suggest that a compound in green tea called EGCG may have some antiviral effects. I am not aware of any documentation of negative interactions between green tea and antiretrovirals, although I would be conscious of the caffeine content. Be certain to consult with your healthcare provider about all your supplements. You can find more information about green tea here.
