|Resources for parents of a young adult with HIV
Apr 1, 2012
Our 23 year old son just told us he was HIV positive. We had a good talk, and are very happy that he caught it and is communicating with us. We feel we need assistance to understand how we can best support him and also face our own feelings and worries. I am looking for family support groups and not having much luck. We live in Oakland/Berkeley area and appreciate any guidance.

Thanks for writing and for your active support of your son. As you know, many people living with HIV have not had the benefit of a supportive family. Fortunately you live in an area that does have numerous resources. The Pacific Center for Human Growth (the LGBTQ community center) has an HIV department and a mental health clinic. They can connect individuals and families with many community resources. The Center has an extensive on-line directory for the whole Bay Area. Contact info: 2712 Telegraph Avenue Berkeley, CA 94705. (510) 548-8283; firstname.lastname@example.org.
Their website is here.
Good luck to you and your son.
