|HELP - daughter has given up
Jan 8, 2011
as parents of a hiv+ daughter aged 38 we find she has ceased all meds for the last 2 months and we feel she has given in. she was diagnosed in 1996 and we have supported her throughout but my wife is suffering depression now because basically we can't help her without her permission

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter and the emotional pain this experience has caused for you and your wife. Feelings of hopelessness can be devastating. Help your daughter utilize the support system she may have developed since her diagnosis, including peers. She would benefit from speaking with someone who has been through a similar situation. An evaluation for an antidepressant (or a change of medication) may also be indicated for her. Don't forget that caretakers also suffer serious physical and emotional consequences. Both you and your wife need to take care of yourselves, remembering that ultimately your daughter will make her own decisions about her care.
