| toxoplasmosis, HIV & Mental Illness Jan 6, 2011 Do you have any opinions on people with HIV and toxiplasmosis in that it can cause Bipolar and other serious mental illnesses. There are NO SUPPORT GROUPS for this, you would think there would be? |

Response from Dr. Fawcett
Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia are increasingly viewed as complex interactive processes between predisposing genes and environmental factors. Medical literature shows that people who are serologically positive for Toxoplasma gondii have an increased risk for Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and even suicide attempts. Since individuals with HIV are at higher risk for toxoplasmosis, it is prudent to be aware of this potential even though it is rare. While you may not find a support group, be certain to share any symptoms or concerns with your healthcare provider so that they can be promptly addressed. | |||||||||
