hiv testing

Jan 11, 2009

I have had several oral sex contacts and I have been tested several time for hiv using the hiv dna by pcr test and I have been neg all times my problem is that I am have several symptoms of having hiv and I just want to know is the hiv dna test a trusted test and do I need to anything else

Response from Dr. Horwath

The most sensitive and best screening test is the HIV antibody test. The HIV PCR for DNA is a trusted, reliable test, but is most useful for monitoring disease progression and making treatment decisions. However, your negative result on these tests should be reassuring.

In any case, oral sex is relatively low risk, but I would recommend an HIV antibody test for confirmation of your status.
