HIV Testing
Oct 8, 2008

Hello Doctor;

I just have been tested for HIV antibody test (MEIA and P24 antigen) 22 days after the possible exposure, The results came Negative.

what is the ratio of people coming positive 22 days after the possible exposure? How accurate are my test results?

Thanks

Response from Dr. Horwath

The p24 is not an appropriate test for screening because it is relatively insensitive, and because p24 antigen is found in the blood only transiently during different stages of infection. The ELISA is the most appropriate screening test, but may remain negative for up to 12 weeks after exposure. It should be repeated at 12 weeks to reduce the likelihood of a false negative.
