Could surgery be connected to a sudden incr in v/l?
Jul 13, 2008

My post surgery viral load, previously undetectable, is 140,000. Might this increase be related to the surgery itself, anesthesia, pain medications, or blood thinners I was prescribed in conjunction with the surgery?"

Response from Dr. Horwath

Any severe strain on your body and your immune system could cause a "blip" in your viral load. Surgery places a big strain on the immune system, which is highly involved in the recovery and healing process. Anesthesia also strains the body's physiologic resources.

I would not be concerned with a single high viral load after surgery. Give yourself several months to recover and heal. Then repeat the viral load and it should be much more meaningful.
