DEMENTIA
May 25, 2008

My Son has dementia, He's 38 what is the best meds. for that? He is HIV.

Response from Dr. Horwath

If his dementia is caused by HIV (which it probably is), then the best therapy is highly-active antiretroviral treatment (HAART). I have seen many patients with HIV-associated dementia respond to HAART with substantial improvements in their memory and other aspects of their thinking.

However, he should be examined by a doctor to make sure that there is not another cause for his cognitive impairment, like a bacterial or fungal infection of his brain or some other medical condition.
