lab work
Sep 2, 2007

My son is HiV positive and sent me his blood work. I am confused. Is it good or bad that his HIV -1 RNA PCR went from 3,315 to 5,210? I am so confused over this blood work?? Pam

Response from Dr. Horwath

This test is often referred to as a "viral load." In general, the best outcome of this test is an "undetectable viral load," That means that the amount of viral RNA in the blood is too low to detect by the test. Small fluctuations like the one you described for your son are probably not very meaningful. What is more important is that the viral load goes down over the long run. If a person is receiving an appropriate and effective antiretroviral therapy, then the viral load should show a downward trend over time, but small up and down fluctuations in the short run are not very meaningful.
