AIDS
Jan 31, 2007

my brother has been diagnosed with aids.how long does a person usually live ,after being very sick.?he is being treated for the pcp disease and the yeast infection in mouth and down his throat and his one test came back below 200,,they gave him a transfusion and said that is was going back up.and is there such a thing as being treated with meds,he can go back to the hiv ,virus?? not aids??? thanks, crying in logan

Response from Dr. Horwath

With proper treatment, your brother can hopefully lead a long and productive life. Unfortunately, he is quite ill now, but the PCP and thrush are very responsive to treatment.

With treatment, his immune system will improve and he will again be able to fight off infections, such as those he has now. If he responds to treatment, his T cell count returns to a normal level and he takes his medications regularly, you have every reason to hope that he will do well.
