disclosure
Jul 29, 2006

Dr. Horwath, Could you help me with a difficult situation. I've recntly disclosed my positive status to a close friend with whom I hope to pursue a relationship. I am uncertain whether he is the one who actually infected me-- I had frequnt unprotected sex with various men several months before his and my only encounter. I don't wish to seem as though I am blaming him for my infection; I was responsible for that-- not aking him to use a condom when he told me he had been positive. I don't wish him to feel as though I am accusing him and ruin our friendship or create any difficulties. I hope he realizes that if our relationship progresses, I disclosed to him because I didn't want to reinfect him with another strain of virus complexifying his health situation needlessly.

Response from Dr. Horwath

Disclosing your status is the responsible action to take. Disclosure is not an accusation or anything other than providing important information to someone who should know (ie. someone with whom you have a sexual relationship).
