Memory Problems Jul 13, 2006 My partner of 16 years was diagnosed with HIV a year ago.He is on Truvada and Sustiva and is doing quite well. There only one problem. He is having short term memory loss.I noticed it start in shortly after he started his meds and has gotten mildy worse over the past year.He is 60 years old. Do you think his meds could be causing the memory loss ? Or could it be something else. He does not like talking about it and has not asked his doctor about it. Should I bring it up to his doctor? Thanks for any help you can give me. |

 No, I don't think the short term memory loss is due to the medications. Usually, the medications are started because a person's viral load has risen and/or T-cells have fallen. These are signs of immune failure and viral reproduction, and it is these processes that are probably responsible for the memory changes in many people with AIDS. Unfortunately, although HAART has made a huge improvement in the morbidity and mortality associated with AIDS, there are still people who are in treatment, but continue to have progression in their cognitive impairment. The reasons for this are not clear. Yes, you should take it up with his doctor. A careful cognitive evaluation would help to clarify and quantify exactly what is happening with his memory. | |||||||||
