| Longevity of HIV patients Jul 7, 2006 I would like to know how long people with HIV live. Even when on a medication regimen. I have been doing some reading and it has been suggested that upon diagnosis and starting medication, they say 10 years. |

Response from Dr. Horwath
Nobody has a way of predicting the life span of a person with HIV/AIDS, anymore than we can predict the life span of a person without HIV/AIDS. I have patients in my own practice who have had HIV infection for 15-20 years. Many people with HIV have survived longer than 10 years. With the current treatments, we know that the quality of life is improved and the risk of opportunistic infections and other complications, including death, is dramatically reduced. However, we cannot predict how long someone will live. | |||||||||
