My girlfriend and I have just been diagnosed with HIV. She has been quite sick and lethargic for a month now. My health seems to be ok. However, my mental health is shot. I am having a very hard time coping with the fact that I have cut short a very promising and productive life. My girlfriend was vibrant and so happy, now she is in pain, angry and hurt. How do I get on with my life?
Response from Dr. Horwath
I don't think you should view it as cutting short your life or hers. With effective treatment available, you are likely to have a very full and productive life.
I advise you to go for some counseling with an individual or group that has experience with HIV. This will help you to cope with the situation.
