Response from Dr. Horwath
HIV is virus that is transmitted from one person to another, usually by unprotected sex or by sharing needle used for injecting drugs. After a person is infected with HIV, they may not realize that they are infected. Most people don't get sick for some time. The average amount of time between being infected and becoming ill is about 10 years in people who don't get any treatment. Untreated people with HIV infection eventually become ill because the virus destroys the immune system, or the body's ability to fight infection. However, we now have excellent treatment available, which can substantially prolong an infected person's life, prevent infection, and improve the quality of life. | |||||||||
