Depression
Aug 31, 2005

Does HIV cause depression and stress even before knowing that one has it, or is it caused only after knowing it

Response from Dr. Horwath

Depression is caused by multiple factors. We know that some people are at higher risk for depression due to genetic or inherited increased risk. In other words, some types of depression run in families. We also know that stresses and adverse life events can contribute to depression, such as the loss of a loved one, learning about an illness (eg. HIV/AIDS), or other traumatic event. Other causes of depression include chronic medical illness, chronic pain, alcohol and other substance abuse, physical or sexual abuse. Some specific illness also increase the risk of depression, such as thyroid disorders, some types of cancer, some neurological diseases, and some metabolic disorders.
