Dear sir, I am a 32yrs. married male and living at Dubai with a friend (male). 2 days back my friend tested HIV +ve. What are the chances that I am also infected with HIV +ive because I lived with him for one month. We were using our seperate accessories for shaving, bath etc. but we were using the same toilet. My room mate is going back from Dubai. What should I do to protect myself from potential chances of infection. HIV virous sustaion till how many days? If I am HIV -ve now could I get infected after some time by using the same toilet , room. What steps shoul I take. Pls. answer me as soon as possible as I am in a great depression. Best regards, xyz

Response from Dr. Horwath

Living in the same apartment/house does not spread HIV infection. This has been well studied, and casual contact such as you describe is not associated with risk of HIV infection.
