awakenings since death of partner from AIDS
May 19, 2004

I experienced some traumatic events more than five years ago. My partner tested positive. the next month I tested positive. One month later he died. I haven't slept a normal night since. It's 4:22 a.m. as I write this. I've done the talk therapy, tried several medications, exercise, sleep hygiene, supplements, herbs, caffeine elinination, depression screenings, on HAART and off. Yet I can only sleep 90- min to 3 hours at a time. Metabolic and mental...Can you wave a magic wand please?!?

Response from Dr. Horwath

I have no magic for you, but sounds like you are suffering greatly. Sometimes you can appear to try everything, but some of the treatment attempts may be incomplete or inadequate. Try to find a psychiatrist who has some expertise in treating depression and anxiety, especially in persons with HIV. A good evaluation and trials of medicine at appropriate doses and for sufficient amount of time should help you.
