Ask the Experts about Mental Health and HIV
still anxious
Sep 7, 2008
Hi,
I had an oral sex encounter back in january and began testing for stds and HIV. I have tested six times within 180 days of the event all negative. I believe I am negative except I worry constantly about the blood draws I had several blood tests two for syphillis and three for HIV blood was drawn at clinics (not the cleanest places in the world) , labs and once at my home by a nurse. Is there any ratinoality to this fear or at basically six months testing and no other events can I consider myself home free.....needle fear unwarranted. The benefit of your experience is much appreciated thanks.
Response from Dr. Horwath
Six negative tests over 6 months are conclusive evidence that you are not infected with HIV.
Your fear based on this exposure is not rational. Remember that the best way to protect yourself from these fears is to not engage in risky sexual behavior. Oral sex is a relatively low risk behavior, but not zero risk. You should always protect yourself with condoms.
