Recent Dx and short term memory loss
May 9, 2008
My husband was just dxed following an episode of PCP. He had a CD-4 of 7. I don't have VL info yet.
Since coming home from the hospital he cannot remember things that happened and loses track of time. He is also depressed. I am worried he has a brain disease.
Is this normal depression or should I be asking to see a neurologist?
Thank you

Response from Dr. Horwath

HIV can cause memory problems, loss of energy, apathy and other symptoms associated with impaired functioning of the brain. This tends to happen mainly in people with severely impaired immune function (eg. CD4 of 7).
If your husband starts antiretroviral treatment, then his immune system should bounce back and he has a very good chance of recovering his memory. Many people who start antiretroviral treatment and have a good response see an improvement in their cognitive (thinking and memory) abilities.
