Just Diagnosed
Jun 17, 2007

I just found out about having HIV a month ago,I'm going crazy and that's all I think about. I have told my brother and a friend who has it also. I've asked to see a mental health professional and one will be assigned to me.I haven't had to see one before but I'm afraid of having to take anti-depressants or any other drugs to deal with my emotions. Can I deal with mood swings without taking medications? Also now that I have it & I decide to have sex.Do I lawfully have to tell the other person of my status even having sex with protection?

Response from Dr. Horwath

Seeing a mental health professional means getting a proper evaluation and having an opportunity to talk. Often that may be all that you need. What you describe as mood swings may be the normal emotions associated with your situation. As for antidepressants and other medications, there is no drug that you have to take. It's entirely your choice. You choose the treatment in collaboration with your therapist and/or doctor.

As for having sex, the reason you need to tell your partner about your status is not because of the law, but because it's the right thing to do. You wouldn't want your partner to withhold that information from you. You would want to know so that you can make an informed decision about sex. You owe your partner the same treatment, not because of the law but because it's the right thing.
