Guillain Barr Syndrome
Jan 11, 2009
Dear Dr Howarth
I find it very strange that an HIV expert would not be aware of Guillain Barr Syndrome, which can be a symptom of HIV infection.
When you tell people that peripheral neuropatghy is not a symptom of HIV infection are you classing GBS as a completely different thing?
GBS is a form of PN so surely you are wrong to say that PN never occus in primary stages of infection?
Thanks
Craig

Response from Dr. Horwath

Guillain-Barré syndrome is probably no more common in the setting of HIV-1 than in the general population. What I was trying to say is that the more common peripheral neuropathies due to AIDS do not usually appear early in the course of the disease. Guillain-Barré syndrome is uncommon in people with HIV, as it is in the general population. You are correct to say that Guillain-Barré syndrome is a form of peripheral neuropathy.
