Response from Dr. Horwath

People who are infected with HIV often have no symptoms for many years. The average time between the initial infection and developing significant symptoms is approximately 10 years. Nowadays, if a person with HIV infection is carefully followed by a doctor and starts treatment based on their CD4 count, they may further delay the onset of symptoms. Also, there are some people with HIV infection who have been living symptom free for 20 years or longer.
When symptoms do occur, they may be non-specific like weight loss, anemia or swollen lymph nodes. In some people, the first signs of HIV infection are due to an opportunistic infection, such as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.
