Response from Dr. Horwath

There is a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry in 2001 that quotes a prevalence rate of depression of 33% among people who are HIV+ (Bing et.al.)
However, the rates of depression vary considerably within the population of people who are HIV+ because it is a very heterogeneous group of people. For example, people who become infected through injection drug use tend to have higher rates of various psychiatric disorders (including depression) than non-drug abusers who become infected through sex. For this reason, it is somewhat oversimplified to quote a single rate and expect it to apply to the whole population of those who are HIV+.
