Slow Progression
Mar 13, 2003
Micheal, I know that you are a 'slow progressor'. What I do not understand however is what exactly is meant by slow progression. Does it mean HIV related problems, which are very subtle? Or does it mean HIV related problems which take a long time to manifest?

Response from Mr. Shernoff

A long term HIV nonprogressor is a person who has a confirmed exposure to HIV for at least ten years, has remained treatment naive and whose blood works show an immune system within a normal range despite being infected with HIV. He or she may or may not have a viral load that is detectable. But they have never had any physical symptoms of HIV related illness.
An HIV slow progressor is a person who has a confirmed exposure to HIV for at least ten years and whose blood work did show some levels of being immune compromised. Usually he or she has had detectable viral levels. He or she may be on antiretroviral therapy. But this person has never progressed to any actual physical symptoms of HIV related illness.
I hope that this clarifies the difference for you.
MIchael Shernoff, MSW
