Response from Dr. Horwath

This depends a lot on your relationship with them. If you are close and they have always been loving and supportive, then you should hope for the same now. If you have a difficult or tense relationship with them, then you might want to work on that first. Try to improve the relationship by talking and developing some closeness and trust first. I know this is difficult, and I don't mean to make it sound simple, but working on the relationship would be helpful before dropping news like this on them.
It would also be helpful to have ally. For example, if you have an aunt, uncle, family friend, teacher or minister who could be helpful and supportive to you and also help you to talk to your parents, that would make a big difference. Ideally it should be someone that both you and your parents know and have some confidence and trust in.
