   Response from Dr. Horwath

This is a very broad question. There are many different types of pain medications depending on the severity of pain. Also, the treatment of pain depends greatly on the cause of the pain. For example, peripheral neuropathy can be caused by HIV or by certain antiretroviral (ART) meds, such as stavudine. The treatment would be different for each.

In general, most pain medications are compatible with antiretroviral medications. There are some medications used as adjuvant treatments that have interactions with ART meds. For example, carbamazepine is often used together with other pain meds. It can lower levels of some ARTs, requiring an adjustment of dose.
