AIDS since 1998/depression/suicidal
Mar 3, 2006

My husband was diagnosed with AIDS in 1998. We didn't have the luxury of finding out he was HIV + first. When we found out his viral load was over 1/2 million and his cd4's was at 16. Not expected to live past two weeks. Well it's 2006 and his viral load has been undetectable for some time now and his cd4's are above 535. I'm having problems helping him deal with depression, sucicidal tendencies, and increased drug use. He's been to rehab several times, counseling and almost all other resources available. What else can I do? At wits end.

Response from Dr. Horwath

Drug rehabilitation often requires multiple treatments. Think of it as a recurring illness. Sometimes one or two treatments don't have a lasting effect, but with repeated treatment there is an effect.

He also needs psychiatric treatment for his depression. Both the depression and drug abuse need to be treated concurrently in order to get the best outcome.

Don't give up hope. Sometimes treatment takes a while to work. Stick with it.
