Mood swings can occur in anyone, and the onset of depression or other types of mood changes is fairly common in a 37 year old woman. About 15% of women experience a significant depression in the course of their lives. Cannabis use can contribute to mood changes as well, if it is used heavily. Heavy users sometimes develop apathy and loss of interest that might look like depression.

HIV is also associated with a higher incidence of mania, which is a type of mood swing in which a person becomes more energetic, talkative, and may have erratic, impulsive behavior and impaired judgment.
