A mother in need of answers, daughter HIV+
Feb 19, 2005

I am a 51yr old mother of a 30 yr old daughter who has aids. She was diagnosed 8yrs ago. She has 2 little girls who she raises on her own. She has CNS symptoms like memory loss, gait instability, constant headaches, and "double vision". She has been on Combivir and Sustiva. She has episodes of being non-compliant, 3 times out of the 8 yrs. She is very depressed. The doctor has done a geneo-type on her but we have not heard any results yet. He has told her not to take any meds until her next appt. which is 3 1/2 wks. I am worried she is going to get worse quickly. She has had PCP twice, I feel she is also getting that again. Any advice will be helpful. Thank-you from a feeling helpless mother

Response from Dr. Horwath

Your daughter should follow the doctor's advice. She needs to get the appropriate treatment based upon the resistance testing. The memory loss and gait instability are signs of HIV effects on the central nervous system (known as HIV-associated dementia). Your daughter's best chance of recovery is to find an effective antiretroviral cocktail, and to be as adherent as possible with it.
