Hiv Detection status
Oct 9, 2008

Hello,

I read in one of your replies that an individual can sometime not develop hiv antibodies for a very long period than the six months and you recommended to test every six months for ten years. My questions are,10 if a person does not develop antibodies then his antigen test can be a solution to identify the Virus. As i recently had a Bioelisa Hiv Ag/Ab Combo test at 5 months and 2 weeks after exposure and the result was negative, 2) can this be satisfactory for me? Thank you

I believe you misinterpreted my reply. Current HIV antibody tests are very sensitive and a test done 12 weeks after exposure will detect virtually every positive case.

You can be very confident that your negative test after 5 months is reliable.

However, the important message is to ALWAYS use condoms when having sex. This will protect you. Testing after exposure will not protect you; it can only inform you of your status.
