Positive P24, but still not testing positive for HIV 18 months later

Friend tested positive for P24 one month after sexual exposure when he became ill. Two years later he has had all negative AIDS tests including three viral load tests. F/U P24 tests are negative. T cells fine. He had a history of giving blood w/o issues. Could the P24 have been a false positive?

The p24 antigen is not recommended for screening purposes for several reasons. One reason is that it is subject to false positive reactions due to the presence of interfering substances in the blood. In view of the subsequent negative p24, HIV antibody and viral load tests, it is clear that the original p24 was a false positive.
