Stressed out from testing
Sep 28, 2008
Hello Dr. Horwath,
I have a question. I was dating a woman in January and February of this year. On January 27 she performed unprotected oral sex on me. I was nervous after this happened so we both got tested a few days later. I was negative and told me she was as well. I again tested negative for the anti-body on March 26th, but at that time I found out I have contracted Hepatitis A from contaminated food. I am very much a worrying kind of person; I am stresses out about many things (including loosing my job). I am sick a lot and I feel like I am having systems of many HIV diseases. When I first had my unprotected sex act I felt very bad, and now I am feeling awful again. I am seeing someone new I like a lot (we have not had sex). I want to know if I should have another test. It was only 58 days between my unprotected sex act and my March test. Thank you very much,
Jason

Response from Dr. Horwath

Having oral sex is a relatively low risk activity. But if you want to be reassured, you should repeat the test. It can take up to 12 weeks to seroconvert (develop a positive antibody test)after an exposure to HIV.
As a person who worries a lot, you should always use protection when having sex, even relatively low risk activity like oral sex. This would help you to avoid these awful feelings.
