Response from Dr. Horwath

The risk of transmitting HIV with this type of contact is very low.
People often ask me whether they should get tested after some type of sexual activity or other exposure. I would like to emphasize that getting tested DOES NOT PREVENT HIV infection. The only way to prevent HIV infection is to avoid exposing yourself. This means using condoms all the time during sex and not injecting drugs. For people who are addicted to injected drugs, the best solution is to get treatment for the addiction. But before treatment, never use dirty needles to inject drugs.
Also, pregnant women need to get tested early in their pregnancy and, if HIV positive, make sure they have the appropriate antiretroviral treatment to prevent passing HIV to their babies.
