girl born with HIV?
Sep 2, 2007

I just found out that the dad of a girl I know is HIV positive. The problem is this girl and I both dated the same guy (she had sex with him a few years before me)My question is if this girls dad has HIV is their any chance she could have been born with it and survived that long without treatment(she was 14 or 15 at the time..shes about 19 now...and no, I don't know when he became HIV positive...she actually doesn't know her dad...all she knows is hes HIV postive)?

Response from Dr. Horwath

There are teenagers who were born with HIV infection and have survived into late adolescence. In fact, I have treated some patients who fit this description.

However, HIV can only be transmitted directly from mother to child, not from father to child. If your friend's mother is HIV negative, then she could not have been infected with HIV from birth.
