Question of life n death
Jun 7, 2007

Dear Doctor, My husband is HIV+.We came to know of this on Nov2, 2006.We have a 16month old son.I was tested for HIV during 8th month of pregnancy by ELISA i.e.aug 2005.It was negative.Again in Nov21 2006, I was tested again by ELISA and HIV DUO -iv generation test. Both were negative. On jan 18 2007, I was again tested with HIV DUO.again negative. The last time we had unprotected sex was on Oct21 2006, before my husband being detected as HIV positive.(But he ejaculated out which is the practice we have been following since our son was born). Is there any chance that I maybe HIV positive? How accurate is the HIV DUO? Do we need to test our son for HIV? My husband and I are software professionals and much is at stake. Your answer would be of immense help

thanks.

Response from Dr. Horwath

The current HIV serology tests are extremely sensitive. After 3 negative tests you have nothing to worry about. Your test in January was 3 months after your unprotected sex in October. This is more than enough time for your HIV serology to convert if you had been infected. I would recommend that you trust the results of these tests.
