| HIV Meds and other inhibitors (DMM) Sep 5, 2000 I am currently on Combivir and Viracept (at least I think that is how they are spelled), and I also am considered a heavy smoker. I am looking into quitting smoking and ways that it can be done. I was told to try the patch system or even Zyban or other medication out there that can help me quit smoking. My question is "Is there any risks in using the patch system, Zyban or any other types of stop smoking medications where there will be adverse side effects to the HIV meds that I am currently on. I asked my usually doctor and she is not sure. So that is why I am asking you. Thanks, Daniel |

Response from Dr. Squires
Daniel: The short answer is that it is safe to use either the patch system or Zyban in conjunction with your combination regimen. There are a number of sources that can aid your physician in finding out whether it is likely that there may be an interaction between your medications and a new one. If you need to use something else than the meds discussed here, he/she will need to find out about possible interactions. Hope that this is helpful. Good luck with your efforts to quit smoking!
