| sustiva question Jul 1, 2001 Can doctors prescribe sustiva for anything other than the treatment of HIV/AIDS? My boyfriend, who does not have HIV/AIDS was just given sustiva for something else. He's been having Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I cannot understand what sustiva would do to help that though. |

Response from Dr. Cohen
Me neither. So far, there are no other known uses for Sustiva other than its use for HIV infection. Some meds do have uses other than what they were initially tested for. And it is possible that new research will find uses for these meds in other conditions. But as far as I know, there is no work going on to suggest that Sustiva is of interest for someone who doesn't have HIV infection. So I'd suggest either a very honest conversation with your boyfriend, or if he still insists he does NOT have HIV, perhaps with him and the MD who is prescribing this medication - to get the rest of the story... Since something doesn't fit. | |||||||||
