| Expectation of HAART started early Mar 30, 2000 Is eradication still a possibility if HAART is initiated during the acute phase of HIV infection? I can't seem to get a yes or no on this question. |

Response from Dr. Cohen
How does "no one knows for sure" sound. There is an active debate about the rate of decay of virus from the slowest decaying reservoirs. Some researchers, most notably David Ho and his group, have data which they feel demonstrates that in some patients, without any periods of drug interruption or viral "blips", the reservoir continues to empty. Others don't agree. Even if the Ho camp is right, the current estimates are about 20-30 years for eradication. This all supposes that we won't have better strategies. It is unlikely that we won't learn more, revise what we think we know, and perhaps, have better ways to try for eradication. Hope that helps, but it is certainly not the straight yes or no you wanted. | |||
