Viracept Schedules Question
Jun 19, 2000
I am on Viracept at 9 am, 2 pm and 7 pm after meal every 5 hours. Is it appropriate schedules for viracept because it has 14 hours gap from 7 pm to 9 am on next day? Will it open a chance of developing resistance?
Response from Dr. Pavia
There is not a problem with the way you are taking viracept, because the half life of the drug is fairly long. However, the FDA has recently approved viracept for twice a day dosing. The dose is slightly higher 5 tablets twice a day with food, instead of 3 3times a day. This regimen is clearly much easier for most people. More importantly, a large long term study comparing 2 vs 3 times a day showed that people did at least as well, in fact tended to do slightly better, on the twice a day regimen. This was probably because of fewer skipped pills.
