Combivir/Stocrin
May 29, 2001

Dear Dr. Young, I've just started a Combivir/Stocrin Combo, Should I have headaches, Can I take Advil? and If I have diahorrea, can I take Imodium? Is there anything I should defenetely not take while taking Stocrin?. Looking forward to your reply.

Response from Dr. Young

From the sounds of it, you must be in Europe, where efavirenz is marketed under the trade name Stocrin.

The answer to your questions is yes, if you have headaches, it is fine to take ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and Immodium is ok to take for diarrhea. Just keep track of how bad your symptoms are, if they persist or get worse, let your doctor know.

There aren't too many significant interactions with over-the-counter medications and efavirenz/zidovudine/lamivudine. A couple of things of possible significance include St. John's wort and garlic supplements. Both of these have been shown to reduce the levels of HIV protease inhibitors via interactions with liver metabolism. This same pathway is involved with the metabolism of efavirenz and (though not tested) could play a negative role.

Hope this helps, good luck. BY
