My live-in boyfriend has tested positive for hiv.I will be tested in 2 days.He was put on combivir and crixivan. Can you tell me what stage he is in.I know he had some kind of count that was 42 thousanths. Can you also tell me the chances of me being positive if we had unprotected sex but no bodily fluids were exchanged ?

Response from Dr. Murphy

Dear Questioner,

I don't know your risk, but you will find out from your test. Having unprotected sex is still a risk, even if no obvious fluids are exchanged, because virus can be in the "pre-cum". Regarding his disease stage, we need to know the viral load, which I presume is 42,000 copies/mL, and the CD4 count (also called T cell count). This is important. A CD4 count below 200 is AIDS, above is HIV positive.

Good luck.
